I tried the version you used in freetype-2.0.2-1mdk and the CVS
snapshot from 
ftp://freetype.sourceforge.net/pub/freetype/unstable/freetype2-current.tar.gz
Both have the same bug that was not in 2.0.1-1mdk, but I did
not look at anything else.

Until the freetype people come up with a solution, it should
be safe to use my patch. It hides the bug by refusing to
access a NULL pointer. That code line is executed once during
program startup and only if the (broken?) n0210041.pfa font
is installed.
