I am afraid this is some kind of misunderstanding.
Matrox binary driver was always based on XFree86 driver.
The only difference of Matrox binary from XFree86 was this HAL (Hardware
Abstraction Layer) module.
I don't see what was changed with this announcement.
Some people can call this Marketing Mess.

Yep.
Especially as Matrox discontinued G400 and G200 in favour of G450.
(at least, that was their plans for March 2001, after CeBIT)
BTW: has somebody tried *new* G800?
