Ok, I got my own working now, but I have no clue if this will work for
anyone else.

I removed mozila-fonts (--nodeps) and reinstalled the package. Then I
did a xset fp rehash just to make sure the font changes were noticed.
And now I can browse with galeon, mozilla, and netscape with good fonts
and not having to override page fonts.
