Chmouel,
Perhaps I expressed myself badly, my scanner is running, I just was telling
Claudio that perhaps with a few commands that could also help him to run the
scanner.

In my case, the scanner epson 1200 Perfection USB was detected by the
installation of MDK 8, but it wasn't installed. In fact I had to create the
dev, enable it for users and change the file epson.conf in the sane directory.
that was I did:

mknod /dev/usbscanner0 c 180 48 (create the device)
chmod 666 /dev/usbscanner0
at the end of the /etc/sane.d/epson.conf file, put: usb /dev/usbscanner0

The sane and xsane files were installed previously during MDK 8 installation.

With 7.2 usb scanner wasn't detected because usb limitations of kernel
2.2.17; in that case I had also to do an script including the lines:
isnmod usbcore
insmod usb-uhci
insmod scanner vendor=0x04b8 product=0x0104

But now it wan't necesary.
