While im on this caffein induced mail binge, may I suggest that in later versions of Mandrake, the user could optionally run rpmdrake at some point in the install to download security updates and distribution updates, before the computer is rebooted for the first time. Preferably, this could be done before any packages are installed. In the case of a net install, that would save download times, and for a cd intall, possibly prevent (in rare cases) hardware/software problems (the recent problems with the default aic7xx driver come to mind) or any cruft left over from replacing old rpm packages. As for the many complaints Im sure to recieve about "why not just let the user run rpmdrake after the install?", Ill answer it now. One, doing this would streamline the install/upgrade process. Two - if any package on a default installation comes with a hardware-destroying bug, or causes the system to become remotely exploitable, those could be avoided by installing the updated packages at the install time, thus avoiding this dangerous window of time between install and running 'rpmdrake' for the first time. Benefits for users: immediate upgrade to a current bugfree(tm) system. No need to download new iso's for the next incremental version Benefits for developers: Less pulling of hair when major problems crop up on certain types of installs - simply release updated packages to ftp servers, and advise users to install with ftp updates. Less support headaches on initial installs. "Value-added feature" bragging rights. Anyways.. could this be done? Jason/Shalrath
