Well, If that other dude (was it you?) tells me how to get some new bios 
(1.23 or better apparently) for controller and I can boot cd then I tell 
you if I can duplicate the slow speed.  my comp and scsi cd slow though 
so it be slow anyway.  Might show you some performance tricks if I can 
get them to work.  Anyway, go to console 2 and unregister your new 
aic7xxx and then modprobe the new one.  Adjust boot cat or whatever as 
needed.  just...n/m.  but do what needed from console 2.  Claudio...you 
should know better,  Anyway, chmouel may be able to explain why in the 
heck you have speed w/ old.  he did some update with that a little 
back.  Didn't hurt my speed though.  I'm running out of small talk...
