I had this same problem and have wasted many house trying to work
around it. commenting out /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1 fixed the
KDE issues for me with a ATI video card. My friend that installed MDK
8 fresh also had this problem.

I still have this style of problem in StarOffice 5.2 and I'm running
out of ideas to try. I've tried many different font catalogue options
and even null XfConfig. gfontsel shows the lucidux fonts as the most
ugly things I've ever seen ( If theres interest, I'll do a screen shot
).

I dont have windows ttfs anywhere on my machine either so that might
be a component of the problem but getting myself back to my old
XFree86 style fonts has proven to be difficult.
