The problem with mc in antialiased 'Konsole' is one of the reasons why 
antialiasing is switched off by default. The only workaround is to
use xterm for mc.
But  yes, switching antialiasing on fixes the other font problems
with KDE, because the (somewhat broken) Type 1 renderer is then
replaced by FreeType.
You will of course still have problems with other apps like netscape.
