[Cooker] About GCC in LM 8

I was wondering about GCC provided with LM 8.0

Version     : 2.96                              Vendor: MandrakeSoft
Release     : 0.48mdk                       Build Date: dim 08 avr 2001 
12:47:16 EDT

According to :

gcc 2.96 is still under development.

My question is : did Mandrake the same thing than RedHat 7.0 ?
Is it possible to compile safely a kernel with this gcc ??
