Re: Up-to-par with apt-get? No. ,by

Dennis Powell over at Linux Planet made a similar gripe in his column
http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/opinions/3256/1/<br>
 and he was pointed to a utility called CheckInstall at
http://mayams.net/~izto/checkinstall-en.html .<br>
<br>
To selectively quote the web-site:<br>
<br>
"After you ./configure; make your program, CheckInstall will run make install and keep
track of every file modified by this installation. When make install is done,
CheckInstall will create a Slackware or RPM compatible package and install it with
Slackware''s installpkg or "rpm -i" as appropiate, so you can view it''s contents with
pkgtool ("rpm -ql" for RPM users) or remove it with removepkg ("rpm -e"). Aditionally,
this script will leave a copy of the installed package in the source directory so you
can install it wherever you want. CheckInstall 1.4.0 series add support for backing up
any modified files before they are modified (done at the system call level). This
allows you to do truly "clean" uninstalls, and protects you from mistakes when you
inadvertedly overwrite configuration files and such."<br>
<br>
Could this be the solution to your problems?<br>
