Well, in fact you *can* type them; the problem is a display problem (the
"two byte mess" is just the right chars displayed in utf-8.

You have two possibilities:

* use utf-8 font and display; eg:
   xterm -u8 -fn -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--15-140-75-75-c-90-iso10646-1

* use locale encoding for display, eg:
   xterm -lc


future versions of xterm will automatically do the right thing.
