I would prefer to see Mandrake accept/endorse/support one
of the existing Linux certifications already out there
today. There are two vendor-neutral certs and the RHCE,
which is of course Red Hat specific.

The two vendor neutral certs are from LPI and SAIR
(from lintraining.com):

-----

- SAIR

SAIR Linux GNU Certification (http://www.linuxcertification.com/)
"The Sair Linux and GNU Certification program involves several steps and
includes several levels. Moreover, there are several study paths one can
take to become 'Linux certified,' in addition to different levels of
certification."

There are three levels of SAIR certification:

Level 1 - LCA (Linux Certified Administrator)
Level 2 - LCE (Linux Cerfified Engineer)
Level 3 - MLCE (Master Linux Certified Engineer)

- LPI

Linux Professional Institute Certification (http://www.lpi.org/)
"The Linux Professional Institute believes in the need for a standardized,
multi-national, and respected program to certify levels of individual
expertise in Linux. This program must be able to satisfy the requirements of
Linux professionals, as well as organizations which would employ or contract
them."

There are three levels of LPI Certification (LPIC):

Level 1
Level 2
Level 3

I personally have ties to SAIR, but have taken (and
passed) exams from both groups. The 2nd level SAIR exams
(Linux Certified Engineer) are scheduled to be released
soon. They offer electives (similar to the MCSE cert,
for those in a world with Windows), including:

Apache
Amanda (Including Backup techniques and disaster recovery)
MySQL
PHP & XML
Perl (Includes Python as well)
Samba
Sendmail

I am not sure what LPI's plans are for their second-level
cert.

I personally think that Mandrake could benefit from tying
in with one of the existing certifications, as developing
their own will be costly and it will be difficult for it
to gain acceptance in the community. The SAIR and LPI
certs have been around for a while, and having the
support of another distribution will only strengthen the
existing certifications, as well as provide Mandrake with
a certification solution without forking over a ton of
money in research and development (not to mention the
fact that the existing certifications are already
available worldwide through the Prometric/Thomson
Learning and VUE testing facilities).

(Once again, I do have ties with SAIR, through my
relationship with Wave Technologies, who is in turn a
Thomson company, along with Prometric. In all fairness,
I have tried to make the views above as neutral and
unbiased as possible.)
