Michael,
You may be having the same problem as I am on the network stuff. Here is
something you can try, it works for me:
1) cd /lib/modules/2.4.4-5mdk/pcmcia (or
/lib/modules/2.4.4-5mdk/kernel/drivers/net if you are not using pcmcia)
2) mkdir tmp
3) cp *.gz tmp
4) cd tmp
5) gunzip *.gz
6) mv *.o ../
7) cd ..
8) rm -rf tmp
9) reboot
This sequence after a new kernel install seems to fix my network
problems. I have narrowed it down to the drivers being gzipped and
something not liking them.
Please let me know if this helps your network problem. (I am doing this
on 2.4.4.-6mdk right now).
