make mrproper trashes the .config file (not a surprise now that I am
forced to think about it :-).  ~grrrr~

Are the config files that are used to build RPMs not kept in the
kernel-source package anymore (other than in .config of course)?  It
seems not.  Guess I will have to back to the kernel-source rpm with
rpm2cpio ...
