the default uses oss, not a prob under gnome unless you happened to have
done something well outside of the normal (or expert, but not post
customized) install in which case you would or should know what is wrong
and how to fix it. gnome once upon a time had a prob with it's loopback
(as kde ppl would call it, inter-process communication) and the mixer on
dsp app but that has been fixed for quite a while. Gnome doesnt use its
own buggy daemon like kde is what i am saying. doesnt sit on dsp
does that explain it any?
