It seems nobody found a fix for gdm? At least I didn't see one and I'm
still having problems (first time you can't log in, second time you can.)
I now found something interesting: It will NOT work if there is NO
/var/lock/console/<user> file yet. This one isn't cleared if gdm can't
start X (which is imho another bug). That's why you can log in the second
time. I didn't go any further, so I can't say why it works this way.
One side effect is that the permissions in /dev are not set to the correct
owner if one is able to login in the second time because then a
/var/lock/console/<user> file does exist.
