Using pppoe, my install-time configurations seem not to have 'taken', also,
since 7.2, through all iterations of 8.0, until now, 8.0 stable. My standard
workaround is to run adsl-setup (/usr/share/doc/rp-pppoe has info) and append
adsl-start to /etc/rc.d/rc.local to start the connection at boot. I see now I
am lacking /etc/rc.d/init.d/adsl but my connection is working (except for
temporarily dropping out nearly daily ~6 pm, which is only recently and, I
suspect, due to deteriorating conditions on the provider side). FWIW :D
