You were right, I have gone back to Mdk 8.1 now.
In console mode I issued mc and the shit hang, and gave no indication on the
screen - had to kill it from another terminal.
I ran a 'strace -o trace.it mc' and shure I got this.

So mc is not to be trusted, searche within mc did not function either.
