This probably doesn't help you, but I had a simlilar problem with
Evolution today (after updating GConf last night). The window would
begin to draw itself, but then just hang. When I ran 'killevo' it would
finish painting the screen, but then die (of course).
So I force reinstalled the GConf packages as well as Evolution, and now
things are working again.
I guess I was figuring that it had something to do with my X lockups
freaking out the kernel and messing up my file system. I honestly have
no clue though.
