[Cooker] kernel-2.4.6-4mdk or problem with XFree86?

Sometime between the last kernel update, and the last two XFree86 
updates, I *cannot* successfully get into X after entering init 5, after 
booting 'linux'. I *can* successfully call 'startx' in init 3, though.

I *can* also successfully boot 'failsafe' (same kernel, but with 
failsafe option) into init 5 and X will start. Any ideas?
