I don't know, I managed to bring the system back up by downgrading to
dev-3.1.1-1mdk with a rescue disk (quite glad I burnt one recently), so the
new dev package is definitely the problem source.

Indeed, the /dev/null file was there, it had rw for everybody, but the
system did not seem to find it. I also could not mount /dev/hdc after
changing root. I had to do it from the rescue ram disk.
I don't really feel like trying the new dev package again right now, but I
might do it a bit later when my hands stop shaking ;-)
