I don't understand your problem:
1) ecasound-1.8.2r14 is available in the contribs
2) I have just compiled ecasound 2.0.1 with:
[gbeauchesne@thalys ecasound-2.0.1]$ gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-mandrake-linux-gnu/2.96/specs
gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Mandrake Linux 8.1 2.96-0.61mdk)
ecasound was simply configured with no particular options:
./configure; make
3) Have you considered the upgrade of gcc-2.96 to 0.61mdk for example ?
