here is what gc (who is in extended week-end (aka holidays:) for 5 days) says
about drakautoinst:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
As part of the work for Mandrake-8.1, I worked on an "auto install helper"
small tool.

It is not exactly the same spirit as RedHat Kickstart configurator: it is
aimed at replaying an installation, rather than configure a new one from
scratch, so the interface and complexity of the program is much more
lower: for each step, you may leave it in 'replay' mode (it will choose
what you've chosen during install) or you may ask for a 'manual' mode.

So, to use it, one needs first to do an install, at least with Build 533:

[gc@bi ~] cat /c/cooker/Mandrake/mdkinst/usr/share/VERSION
/ChangeLog/1.533/Tue Aug 14 14:40:25 2001//

This install will save for you a file called `/root/replay_install.img',
which will be the base for `drakautoinst'. You may then launch
drakautoinst with drakxtools-newt-1.1.7-1mdk or later, and select the
manual steps from the GUI:

http://people.mandrakesoft.com/~gc/drkauto.png

After clicking on `Ok', it will save the modified auto-install floppy for
you, and you may then replay your install.

It is not yet "heavily" tested, but all the steps of the install seem to
work correctly together with the replay/manual behaviour. (a bug in
creation of bootdisk and setup of bootloader is corrected in CVS, use
Build 534 or later if necessary)

An extended documentation will come soon (after I come back from my
extended week-end, Aug-15 -> Aug-20).

Enjoy.
