While having some trouble getting Cooker to install over the last few days, I decided to d/l and try Red Hat 7.1. No out of the box PHP capabilities was my first big turnoff. And I never realized how much nicer then DrakXXX tools are to use for configuring my system. Having the nfs mount point set up for me by my NFS install was nice, too. I went to add a package to Red Hat after the fact and discovered that not only was there no premade mount point, there was little in the way of an upgrade facility. I give RH credit for sticking to the i386. They remain accessible to many an old server. And their update did install the i586 version of the kernel for me after the install (unfortunately, that was the only package recompiled for i586 optimisations that I saw). RH must be feeling pretty cramped by now with the single CD setup. I can understand why they had to leave some stuff out. I may be a little unfair in this. I did only play with it for about a day. I just never realized how spoiled I'd become with Mandrake's features and included packages before. Thanks Mandrake team. Sometimes those little things go a long way. Now I'm off to see if I can finally get Cooker to install again...
