Yes, that's normal.  Reiserfs does not support drives with bad blocks \8(
There may be patch somewhere to support this, but i don't know if it's
included in the mdk kernel.

BTW, anyone know if JFS supports bad block marking/scanning?

If your drive has bad blocks, better go with ext3.
