I've never use such a command but I think that you'd better test an ext2
partition : /dev/hdxy
you've got also the prog : badblocks
badblocks -s /dev/hdxy
> Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.
I hope it don't trash your MBR
grep ext2 /etc/fstab
