what about use gpm ?
you link gpm to the mouse and make gpm act as a repeater.
XFree use the pipe of gpm ( /dev/gpmdata ), so even if you unplug and change
your mouse there's no pb.
It works for ps/2 too.
Check the doc of gpm.
