It will not install pcmcia stuff if no pcmcia adapter is detected.

Have you verified that during stage1 you don't have "no pcmcia adapter
detected" in the logs?

If none is detected, stage2 will also try to perform a guess (if no
"noauto" kernel parameter) but it will probably fail also.

What pcmcia adapter do you have?
