I have found that I can stay up when in single user
mode, so I checked the logs again and could find no
pattern or clue as to why it was failing. However,
since I could function in single user mode I went back
to runlevel 5 and then closed most of my services
including xinetd. The system is running now, so I
intend to bring up a service every 15 minutes or so
until I find which one is causing the problem.
