I had a problem installing beta2 cds. After the reboot after installation
(chose lilo text) it printed a nice pattern of ' 40' repeated endlessly.
The setup may be unusual. I had win2k taking up all of a 2GB
partition on /dev/hda and installed Mandrake in a partition
on the 13GB /dev/hdb. I then booted from floppy and tried grub and
it also gave an error on boot. Now that I know how to recover my
boot sector I can do more experiments if anyone wants. Maybe
as a general point you should put up an alert when running lilo
telling the user how to restore their old boot sector if they
have problems later booting. You should also explicitly specify
that the user can decline to write a boot sector and leave booting
to floppy.

Some random comments:

1. I had a very big tar file with lots of long file names with
funny characters. Gnu tar dies horribly reading it. This is probably
a security problem if people use tar for backups. Anyway star
was fine. It doesn't provide all gnu switches but it would be
nice to have it available: http://freshmeat.net/projects/star/.

2. The real ksh93 is now available and David Korn says he'd like
to see it added to distributions. http://www.research.att.com/sw/tools/
