since it appears that the software manager does not
always seem to complete the scripts for kernel
upgrades, maybe you might consider having lilo run as
part of the shutdown/reboot script. If it fails maybe
kick out to a shell prompt like fsck does with a set
of instructions on what to look for and how to fix it
(most problems I have seen have to do with improper
linking). This could be run each time or just be a
temp script that runs the first time you shut
down/reboot after a kernel upgrade. This appears to be
a common problem still and would provide a safety net
for newbies.
