what is the memory used given by the "free" command?

When i use top to view my memmory, it tells me xchat is only taking about about 5 megs or my 512 megs of ram, but after an hour or so on x-chat, the amount of RAM X takes up greatly increases. top will still say that xchat is only using 5 megs, but X now starts to take up around 250 megs!!!, as soon as i close xchat, X memmory usaage goest back down to about 10-15 megs, what's the deal with xchat? mark
