Hi,

Installed 8.1 on my Toshiba Portege 7200 laptop a few days ago & it looks
great. The only snag I've had is an oddity with a USB wheelmouse. On three
different occasions the mouse has just stopped responding - but the mouse
cursor responds to the keyboard's joystick.

After a bit of poking around I discovered that the /dev/usbmouse file had
gone!! Checked /var/log/messages - nothing, /var/log/XFree86.0.log has one
line "xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/mouse No such file or
directory".

Checked /dev/mouse, sure enough it's a dangling symlink to /dev/usbmouse.
Checked lsmod: the usbmouse module is still loaded. Ran mouseconfig in a
virtual console - presto, /dev/usbmouse is back and working in X again.

The machine is running the default devfs configuration, but I can't find
anywhere what might have caused this.

Any suggestions appreciated.

On a side note - I've found during the 8.1 install (both with a PS2
wheelmouse and USB wheelmouse): if you try to change from the detected
non-wheelmouse setting to wheelmouse, the mouse stops working for the rest of
the install. This happened both on the aforementioned laptop and on a
desktop (MSI motherboard, VIA chipset, 800Mhz Athlon). Anyways, just thought
I'd mention it.

Regards,

- Brendon.
