I've used a dual boot system since I started using Mandrake. I have NEVER had a problem with linux overwriting/harming/touching/etc my windows partitions even after I started playing around with Cooker. If you tried to reinstall Windows after installing Mandrake, yes you will have a problem, but take that one up with your local MS Admin who lets nimda run all over his network. I've installed the download versions of both 8.0 and 8.1 with a dual boot using Windows 98 and on another machine with Win2k with no problem whatsoever. I would make sure your HD isn't damaged or you could call an MS help desk.
