This sounds a bit like the problem I had on my old Sparc where I installed
on the external drive and specifying the boot device did not help until I
changed something in the lilo.conf...  My failing memory thinks it was
something like "init=..."  If you don't figure it out, I'll be home later
and can fire up the ol' beast and give you more accurate info...
