The problem site had done a test to see which browser I had then did a
sound on a mouseover, it just didn't do it for Mozilla. The place that
worked was nickjr.com which was using Flash. In my testing since then,
starting Mozilla inside of artsdsp (soundwrapper) made so that all the
plug-ins (Flash, Real, etc.) worked just fine.

This problem is caused by flash plugin (not opensource) which always
tries to run esd.. Try to start it manually (maybe within a artdsp)
