I have a similar problem. My problem is that xmms won't start
with "xmms <filename>", it works with "xmms" and "soundwrapper xmms"
but if you type in a filename or click on a music file like a wav
or mp3 it just choaks and hangs.

This can solve your problem.(And install aRts).
