I've been trying to keep an eye out for strange X/KDE bug where clicking on something (usually) results in X/KDE restarting on rare occasions...
The other day, after over a month of everything working fine (bugs never happen when you're watching...), I got what I thought was the same problem... but with a twist now... every time I try to switch to a VC, X/KDE freezes and all keyboard/mouse input is dead. The only way out of this is to ssh in from another box and "telinit 1; telinit 5" -- but, VCs are still not avilable via Ctl+Alt+F[1-6]... Got another crash just now and thought I'd check out some stuff... anyone want to hazard a guess at what happened here...?: # ll /dev/pts total 0 crw------- 1 pfortin tty 136, 0 Jan 10 01:10 0 crw--w---- 1 pfortin pfortin 136, 1 Jan 10 01:11 1 crw--w---- 1 pfortin tty 136, 10 Jan 7 09:27 10 <== crw--w---- 1 pfortin pfortin 136, 2 Jan 10 01:17 2 crw------- 1 root tty 136, 26 Jan 7 13:01 26 <== crw------- 1 pfortin pfortin 136, 3 Jan 10 01:23 3 crw------- 1 pfortin tty 136, 5 Jan 7 13:07 5 crw------- 1 pfortin pfortin 136, 6 Jan 10 01:24 6 Yup... 4 and 7 are gone... I suspect a weird bug; but where to start looking... I can use the system in GUI-only mode for a while if anyone wants me to dig deeper... Getting stuff together to post at : and "ls -lR /dev" now shows: total 0 crw------- 1 pfortin tty 136, 0 Jan 10 01:10 0 crw--w---- 1 pfortin pfortin 136, 1 Jan 10 01:11 1 crw--w---- 1 pfortin tty 136, 10 Jan 7 09:27 10 <== crw--w---- 1 pfortin pfortin 136, 2 Jan 10 01:25 2 crw------- 1 root tty 136, 26 Jan 7 13:01 26 <== crw------- 1 pfortin pfortin 136, 3 Jan 10 01:24 3 crw------- 1 pfortin tty 136, 5 Jan 7 13:07 5 crw------- 1 pfortin pfortin 136, 6 Jan 10 01:44 6 crw--w---- 1 pfortin pfortin 136, 7 Jan 10 01:50 7 <== crw--w---- 1 pfortin pfortin 136, 8 Jan 10 01:37 8 <== $ uptime 2:11am up 93 days, 5:54, 9 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.01 More info at http://pfortin.com/Linux/BUG.Jan10.2002/ Thanks, Pierre
