Runs OK here.
I copied $HOME/.kde to $HOME/.kde3 and $HOME/Desktop to $HOME/Desktop3.

/etc/X11/wmsession.d/11KDE...
        NAME=KDE3
        ICON=kde-wmsession.xpm
        DESC=The K Desktop Environment
        EXEC=/opt/kde3/bin/startkde3
        SCRIPT:
        exec /opt/kde3/bin/startkde3
/opt/kde3/bin/startkde3...
        #!/bin/sh
        export KDEDIR=/opt/kde3
        export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3
        export PATH=/opt/kde3/bin:$PATH
        export KDEHOME=$HOME/.kde3
        exec /opt/kde3/bin/startkde
