No, the problem appeared when I compiled a kernel with 
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP_AES=n
kernel option.
If I do this, I get a bunch of aes symbols missing when
I (or mkinitrd :-) tries to load the loop.o module.
Result: No loop.o, mkinitrd not working -> No new kernel
can be installed (at least as long as the kernel requires
an initrd image).
