Did all you said and nothing made any difference.
I did note however that both Suspend to RAM and Suspend to Disk do indeed
suspend. The problem comes when the laptop attempts to wake up. Don't know if
that helps at all.
Also updated to glibc-2.2.4-22mdk. The problem still occurs but now the
screen never comes back at all !! So I can't tell if any error messages are
displayed or if they are different to the one below.
I have no hibernation partition. It uses a small FAT partition which contains
a swap file. (Done this way because the file / partition utility doesn't
allow manual setting of partition size. This makes it a real pain if you ever
add more RAM !!)

I actually used to own one of these laptops. At the time I was using RH 5.2.
Following some bug reports etc. I finally downloaded, from the Rawhide site,
a version of apmd that actually worked 100% with this laptop - just not with
any other. I doubt very much that I still have it :-(
