The startup for KDE3 MUST put the path to KDE3 FIRST. Otherwise you'll
be running all the KDE stuff from /usr/bin, which is KDE2, which won't
work, especially for all the "control" stuff like kdeinit and such.
You must have started KDE3 after logging in on a console, instead of
from the [xgk]dm graphical login window. If so, logout (completely, not
just from X) and login again. KDE3 temporarily changes your PATH, so a
fresh login should go back to the defaults.
Works for me.

I believed mdk will wait for KDE 3.
Just a note, if I use KDE 3 one time, I've got this :
[will@bastard will]$ echo $PATH
/opt/kde3/bin:/opt/kde3/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/usr/java/jdk1.3.1/bin
pb is now that under 2.2 I launch ... kde3 apps
To my mind when someone launch kde 3, KDE 3 should save user PATH and
only after add its path. when you logout, KDE should restore old PATH
