I always used "r128" as driver, not "ati", and it worked fine. DRI 
documentation and XFree differs on this point. Maybe they are just alias.

I had to add the final alias in modules.conf to have agpgart loaded:
alias char-major-226 agpgart

Is this a problem ? I got this too.
Actually, my own case isn't very much useful, as i've got big problems with 
this driver, but it used to work fine for me.
