Cooker install report - Draxk v. 1.646

Good Day, this is a report on installing from cooker today. The most
up-to-date
package included was devfsd-1.3.23-4mdk; i.e. there have been 7 package
updates
since, as of 9:11 pm Japan time. (GMT +8)

Note: bugs or notes are preceeded by a line of numbers i.e. 1111111111111111
so they will be easier to pick out - I tried to make this bug report as
thorough as possible but as a result it's long and long-winded.

Cooker was mirrored to an ext2 partition, and installed using hd.img copied
to
a floppy.

111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111

In stage 1, the following error was reported: (from stage1.log)

* have to insmod sd_mod
* needs scsi_mod
* needs sd_mod
*       succeeded sd_mod
* PCI: device 1000 008f is "Symbios|53c875J" (sym53c8xx)
* have to insmod sym53c8xx
* needs sym53c8xx
* init_module: sym53c8xx: No such device
*       failed
* warning, insmod failed (sym53c8xx (null)) (1)
* unsetting automatic

i.e. it had problems with the SCSI card. (no previous Mandrake I've tested
has
had this problem.)

Install Steps:

1. The install went to graphical mode. I selected to use English for the
install, and also selected Japanese to be available.
2. I chose expert mode, and the install option.

222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222

3. Again, graphical install couln't configure the SCSI card. (from
ddebug.log)

* step `setupSCSI' finished

The graphical display also complained. Still, it claimed to have found the
card,
and asked for confirmation.

4. I selected a generic PS2 wheel mouse, and testing went fine, though it
behaved erraticaly for the initial two seconds or so.
5. I selected the Japanese keyboard.
6. I partitioned; linux is on hdc, and /, /home, /swap, and cooker are the
only
things on the disk. / and /home are ReiserFS. I had to reboot after
partitioning, and got exactly the same set of error messages the second time
through as I did the first.
7. Package selection: on initial screen I clicked game and multimedia
station in
addition to the defaults. Went to individual package selection.
8. Removed Aurora, drakfirsttime, netscape, and webmin from the list.
9. Added fluxbox, xawtv, xawtv_misc, and all xmames to the list.
10. gave the OK to start the freewnn server. (for Japanese)
11. Set the root password and to authenticate locally.
12. Added one user.

444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444

Some icons are duplicated, and clicking to change is
confusing because the duplicates come up before the new icons - it's
difficult
to tell if you've cycled through all of them or not.
13. Said not to defualt logon one person.
14. Told it not to autodetect net settings.I selected LAN connection (I have
a
cable modem.) and it found the netcard, (RTL-8029).
15. Entered IP, netmask, selected no auto IP. Entered hostname, dns, and
gatway.
slected no proxies. At summary display, set timezone to tokyo, and not set
to GMT
or use auto-synchro.
16. Said not to look for updated packages.
17. Said ok to start the services (29 of 41.)
18. Selected text-mode lilo as the bootloader, 5 second delay, off /dev/hda.
Set
the windows partition to be the default option.
19. Created bootdisk.
20. Selected accelerated Xfree86 4.2.0 at 1024x768, 24 bit color. Tested
(ok).
21. Said yes to start X on boot.

(end install)

5555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555

On boot, I get the following two-line message right before "starting
kheader".
I'm not sure if it's an error.

/etc/rc5.d/S99devfsd line 30: syntax error near unexpected token '}'
/etc/rc5.d/S99devfsd line 30: '}'

Boot seems to complete with no problems.

666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666

I then log in as the user, into KDE, and get the following error message:

"error init sound driver
  device /dev/dsp can't be opened (device or resource busy)
  will continue using null output

7777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777

I wanted to try tuxracer, but it would not load after not finding
libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.0 - thus I couldn't test DRI. (At least, I'm not l33t
enough to know another way.)

88888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

xawtv only works if the ati.2 binaries from gatos.sourceforge.net are
installed.
It then works, but I think these should be installed automatically for those
with the right cards. (as should the GATOS video capture kernel module and
video viewer.)

9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999

I can't figure out how to get Japanese support to work - I've tried
installing
yudit and changing my locale inside KDE. Pressing shift + alt does nothing.
Also, selecting the Japanese locale in KDE results in ????????????????s
rather
than Kanji.

1010101010101010101010101010101010101010101010101010101010101010101010101010

An excellent addition to the wonderfully convenient mandrake config
utilities
would be one for joysticks - i still haven't gotten my sidewinder gamepad
(non-USB) working, though I haven't exhausted all of things I can try yet.

And to end on a good note, RPMdrake seems not to hang anymore when serching.
Neat!
...And rest assured that if I didn't bitch about it above, it worked great.
;)

...and that's it. Please let me know if you need anymore debug data. If all
of the
issues I described above are fixed, I will _definitely_ be buying mandrake
8.2
- it'll be a perfect OS!

Thanks,
