I'm gettig almost the same with an es1370 sound card - sometimes I get the
startup sound but the error banner saying /dev/dsp busy.

In all cases, killall /usr/bin/artsd and then start it manually gets the
sound going so the modules are being loaded OK, maybe the mixer is getting
the raw alsa devices before artsd?
