that's ALSA. It is known to start with most output channels muted (in my case - SB Live! - both main output and pcm channels are muted). Start aumix or any other mixer and check settings. Number of modules is normal for ALSA. You may try OSS as well. Module should be cs46xx, just comment out sound stuff you currently have in modules.conf and add alias sound-card-0 cs46xx -andrej
