I think a serious look at XftConfig is needed. For one thing, it is not working now
because
dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/"
should be changed into:
dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/ttf"
also, I wrote the following in my HOWTO and from the feedback I receive I really think
it should be the
default behaviour. If anybody disagrees please explain!
match
any size > 8
any size < 15
all weight < bold
all slant == roman
edit
antialias = false;
(it disables AA for sizes between 8 and 15 exepting bold and italics)
also, add these:
match
any family == "symbol"
edit
antialias = false;
encoding += "glyphs-fontspecific";
match
any family == "Standard Symbols L"
edit
antialias = false;
encoding += "glyphs-fontspecific";
match
any family == "dingbats"
edit
antialias = false;
encoding += "glyphs-fontspecific";
match
any family == "Cursor"
edit
antialias = false;
encoding += "glyphs-fontspecific";
match
any family == "StarBats"
edit
antialias = false;
encoding += "glyphs-fontspecific";
match
any family == "StarMath"
edit
antialias = false;
encoding += "glyphs-fontspecific";
the antialias=false is not strictly neccesary, but the encoding change makes symbol
fonts work
(who is this Laurent Culioli who did it for webdings/windings??...he stole my
work-around :-P)
Ofcourse, Xft uses freetype2 and the ttf bytecode interpreter is disabled here because
of some patents (which is kinda
strange because I think it is enabled in freetype1). Actually, using freetype2 now
with or without AA looks shitty. If
freetype1 already violates the patent I think we can just enabled the stuff in
freetype2?
Please comment? It leads to _much_ better looking ttf fonts.
If it cannot be included, a fixed freetype2 (perferrably 2.0.8, instead of 2.0.6 which
is now in the beta) can be put on PLF?

"`How do you feel?' he asked him.
`Like a military academy,' said Arthur, `bits of me keep
passing out.'" ....
`We're safe,' he said.
`Oh good,' said Arthur.
`We're in a small galley cabin,' said Ford, `in one of the
spaceships of the Vogon Constructor Fleet.'
`Ah,' said Arthur, `this is obviously some strange usage of
the word "safe" that I wasn't previously aware of.'
