I've got a similiar problem.  I'm using current cooker, and when I login
thru gdm, the system will always start KDE unless I manually select
something else.  

At my home system, GDM remembers the last session used and uses this as
a default.  That's rather annoying :(

echo startgnome > ~/.xinitrc

But you're right, a user should not have to do this.
