kernel 2.4.17-17mdk
$ lspci | grep 128

When dri and glx is enabled (and AGPMode '2'), and using fb:
kdm without root background
glxgears works and is fast.
I had some stability issues in normal day by day use without 3D progs (see
bugzilla #5918, but haven't tested enough with current kernel).
If I use a molecular viewer program ("vmd", not in dist), X freezes during
generating of a text label.

Now running a custom kernel build from 2.4.17-18mdk _without_ CONFIG_FB_VESA
and aty128 module is not loaded, hence without fb.
The above mentioned kdm problem still exists, but sometimes the background is
drawn.
glxgears is still running fast as expected...
The problem with the OpenGL prog "vmd" is gone!!
Stability pb will be reported, until now everything is ok.
