OK - so I shared a directory under one machine and tried to browse it
using another (using Komba)

I saw the remote directory, mounted it and tried to explore it (but
nothing happened under Komba). Ok, so I'll try Konqueror and navigate
to the locally mounted directory (/home/rfox/komba/FOXBASE/RFOX_PICS) -
BAM - Konqueror dies unexpectedly. Let's launch it from the CLI -
now I see the following error (after konqueror dies) when I try to open
the remotely mounted directory: Bus error

Under the CLI I can open the directory and see all the files.
Can't write any new ones (even as local root) but can at least read
them.

What's is the best way to transfer files back and forth between systems?

Cheers,
R.Fox
